My Little Tree.

I’ve never been a green thumb, and by that I mean I’ve never been able to grow something from a seed.

Well that was the case up until about 2 years ago (I know 2 years is a long time but…) So 2 years ago I was eating apricots and usually I’d just throw the seed out and thats that, but this time I decided to put it up on the window seal to dry out. Admittedly I forgot about the thing for probably a month because it was in the corner but eventually I spotted the little crack nut up there and decided it was probably time to plant the thing seeing as it was December 26-27th, one of those days.

I left the little pot inside next to the window so it would get sunlight but not the harsh heat of the Australian summer, top 30′s if my memory is correct. Knowing that my green thumb was thrown in the bin at the hospital when I was born instead of being given to me I didn’t have high hopes for anything growing. Boy was I shocked when after 3 weeks of watering a pot of dirt a small green shot popped out…

“Just a weed son.”

Thats what my dad told me over and over again but hey… I made a weed grow, I wasn’t going to let my weed just died now was I? This was my little bundle of joy, my first green thumb experience, I’d stolen someone’s green thumb and used it to grow a weed, how awesome was I? (Not that awesome… its a weed.)

After another month of watering my weed it had changed from weed to some sort of plant about 2 inches high (5cm), clearly weeds don’t have little leaves and buds on them. The year rolled on and the plant grew to about 2.5 inches and just remained the same… winter came and was almost gone but that didn’t matter because my plant had been inside over winter so it was safe. I went online and did a bit of research of fruit trees and read that they were suppose to lose their leaves during autumn/winter. 2 more days passed before I put the thing outside and within the day its leaves were gone and my little 2.5 inch tree was down to 1.5 inches.

My dad later told me that it was ok to shorten the dormant season of some plants and fruit trees were one. Over the spring and summer of last year the tree grew to about 9 inches high (22.5cm) and now that it was an outside tree it lost its leaves earlier then the year before and has been dormant until about 2 weeks ago. Billions of little buds and miniature leaves have started poking their heads up, so the excitement of this spring is high because my little tree is going to go mental.
